On Friday, December 8th, County Executive Matt Meyer signed Ordinance 23-160 creating the new County Public Arts Commission. Ordinance 23-160, proposed and spearheaded by Councilperson Dee Durham, District 2, was unanimously adopted on November 28th, setting the stage for the nine-member Commission New Castle County’s Commission launch which was held and celebrated at the Delaware Art Museum Sculpture Garden. The event was attended by a local contingent of arts advocates and key figures like DAA’s Executive Director Neil Kirschling and Board President Molly Giordano, Executive Director of the Delaware Art Museum. Said Neil at the bill signing, “This endeavor marks a significant stride toward enriching New Castle County with visually striking public art and we congratulate County Executive Meyer, Councilperson Durham and her council colleagues.”

The Public Arts Commission is comprised of individuals from museums, foundations, universities, and artists themselves. It will advise the county government on art placement, acquire artworks for public spaces, review conservation plans, and influence policies for integrating visual arts into county developments.

According to the Ordinance’s goals set forth: “By encouraging more tourism, the Public Arts Commission will be an economic driver through job creation, generating tax revenue, stimulating business activity, and boosting area property values.”
