About the Delaware Arts Alliance

Delaware Arts Alliance is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with a mission to serve as the unifying voice for the arts throughout the state, advocating for the central role of the arts and arts education in advancing dynamic communities and a creative citizenry. We inform, empower and mobilize Delawareans who cultivate, support, and advance the arts.

Following the national fiscal crisis of 2008, artists, art professionals and civic leaders across Delaware grew concerned about the future of the arts sector. They formed a 16-member coalition with the goal to raise awareness of the importance of the arts for economic and community development. It was clear that Delaware needed a strong, unified voice speaking on behalf of arts and culture, and none existed at the time. The coalition brought together an initial group of 33 Delaware arts organizations to form the Delaware Arts Alliance in 2009. Since then, the alliance has nearly doubled in size and is a strong force in advocating for the arts at the state and national levels.

Recently, DAA has deepened connections with legislators, created pathways to federal and state COVID-response funding, and formulated initiatives designed to secure sector sustainability. For instance, the DAA

  • Fostered the launch of the bipartisan and bicameral Delaware Arts and Culture Caucus in the Delaware General Assembly.
  • Secured the first increase in state arts funding in nearly a decade: A $1M (25%) increase to arts organizations and artists through the Delaware Division of the Arts
  • Engaged hundreds of Delawareans to give input into the Creative Economy and Tourism Expansion (CREATE) Plan, to be released this summer.
  • Helped conceptualize and develop an Equity Arts Incubator in 2021 to address issues of inequity, social injustice and bias in the arts. This effort was funded by the Delaware Department of State at $1.25M and is operated by the Delaware Division of the Arts (DDOA).
  • Secured access, through advocacy, to just over $30 million of CARES Act funding for financial relief to Delaware creative industries.
  • Provided key data on the state of Delaware arts education through the Delaware Arts Education Project with DDOA and the Delaware Department of Education.
